Key Points

  • $200,000 allocated to maintain the former Mattacheese Middle School
  • Heating the entire building is required to prevent frozen pipes
  • The gymnasium remains vital for town recreation after district school consolidations

Voters approved $200,000 for the ongoing maintenance of the former Mattacheese Middle School building under Article 21, despite resident questions regarding the efficiency of heating a largely vacant facility. The building currently serves as a hub for town recreation programs.

DPW Director Jeff Colby explained that while only the gymnasium is in active use, the entire building must be kept at a minimum temperature. The water system would freeze if it were at least kept at a minimum temperature, Colby said. Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith added that the Mattacheese gym is essential because the district lost significant indoor and outdoor athletic space when it consolidated schools.

The Mattacheese Utilization Committee has previously recommended the total demolition of the aging school to make way for a regional sports complex. However, until those plans are finalized and funded, the town must maintain the structure to prevent pipe bursts and preserve the existing recreation space. The article passed by voice vote.
