Yarmouth Faces Significant Budget Deficit Following Historic Blizzard of 2026

Key Points

  • Article 1 addresses budget shortfalls for the current fiscal year (FY2026)
  • The primary driver of the deficit was the historic "Blizzard of 2026"
  • Whritenour estimated this to be the worst snow year for Yarmouth in approximately 20 years

Town Administrator Robert Whritenour informed residents that Article 1 of the upcoming Town Meeting will address a substantial financial shortfall in the current fiscal year budget, primarily driven by extreme winter weather. The deficit was caused by what Whritenour described as the Blizzard of 2026, a storm that capped off one of the most challenging winters for the town in two decades.

Whritenour noted that the snow removal budget requires immediate attention before the town can move forward with other financial business. This was probably the worst snow year that we've had in 20 years, I would estimate... we've got a pretty substantial deficit just for the snow removal and that needs to be taken care of first, he stated during the informational broadcast.

The funding requested in Article 1 is intended to close the gap for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026. While the town has historically managed winter costs, the scale of the 2026 blizzard necessitated this supplemental appropriation to ensure all municipal accounts are balanced before the start of the new fiscal year in July.
