Yarmouth Amends Plastic Reduction Bylaw to Facilitate Business Compliance

Key Points

  • Moves implementation of the plastic ban to Board of Health regulations
  • Allows for a "reasonable and feasible" phase-out for businesses
  • Aimed at addressing current lack of affordable plastic alternatives

Voters approved Article 7, which amends the town's plastic reduction bylaw to allow for a more manageable implementation process for local businesses. The change moves the specifics of the plastic ban into Board of Health regulations, allowing for flexibility as the industry transitions to more sustainable materials.

Select Board member Liz Argo explained that the immediate ban on all carry-out plastics had created significant hardships for local food service providers. An immediate ban on all plastic products for carry-out food was a hardship... and in many cases impossible to implement, Argo said. Mary Craig of the Board of Health added that as affordable and safe alternatives to prochemical products become available, our regulation will move along with it.

The amendment is intended to ensure that the environmental goals of the original bylaw are met without causing undue economic distress to Yarmouth's business community.
