Key Points

  • Override will fund a "reduced service" school budget for FY2027
  • McKinney-Vento transportation costs for unhoused students rose 338%
  • Approval remains contingent on a subsequent ballot vote

Yarmouth Town Meeting approved a $1,481,348 operating override for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District under Article 8, following a debate over rising costs and state funding formulas. The override is part of a total certified school budget of $47,358,178 for Fiscal Year 2027.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith characterized the request as a reduced service budget, explaining that despite the increase, the district would not be able to maintain all current services. Smith cited an 8% rise in health insurance and a massive 338% increase in McKinney-Vento transportation costs for unhoused students. Once they start crossing town lines, we can't make it work with our general transportation system... and that's where it really starts to get expensive, Smith noted.

While some residents, like John Tuzo, criticized the state for spending like a drunken sailor and leaving local taxpayers with the tab, supporters emphasized the impact on property values. Resident Lindsay Pietro argued that for a home valued at $710,000, the override would cost approximately $7.50 per month. There is an absolute direct correlation between the performance of local schools and the value of your home, Pietro said. The article passed by a significant majority, though it remains subject to approval at the ballot box.

Motion: I move the town raise and appropriate the amount of $45,876,430... and further to raise and appropriate an additional amount of $1,481,348... subject to approval of an override.
