Key Points

  • Articles 8 and 9 seek Proposition 2 1/2 overrides for regional school budgets
  • Dennis-Yarmouth faces a reduction in anticipated state aid
  • Cape Cod Tech enrollment from Yarmouth has spiked by 20%
  • Approval is required at both Town Meeting and the May 19 ballot election

Yarmouth residents will be asked to vote on proposed property tax overrides in Articles 8 and 9 to address funding gaps for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District and the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. Town Administrator Robert Whritenour explained that these overrides are necessary to maintain current educational service levels in the face of shifting demographics and state funding formulas.

Article 8 addresses a shortfall for the Dennis-Yarmouth district caused by a reduction in anticipated state aid. Article 9 concerns Cape Cod Tech, which has experienced a 20% spike in Yarmouth student enrollment. For both the Dennis Yarmouth Regional School District and the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, there will be a proposed override associated with those budgets just in order to maintain our current service levels, Whritenour said.

Because the proposed spending exceeds the limits of Proposition 2 1/2, the measures require a two-step approval process. Voters must first approve the articles at the Town Meeting on April 28, followed by a successful ballot vote at the annual town election scheduled for May 19, 2026.
