Maintenance Funding Requested for Madaki School Pending Reuse Decision
Key Points
- Article 21 funds maintenance for the Madaki School for one year
- The Utilization Committee is finishing recommendations for the site
- Administrator notes this may be the final year of maintenance requests
- Follows broader town debates on the reuse of aging municipal buildings
Article 21 seeks funding for another year of maintenance at the Madaki School, even as the town moves closer to a final decision on the building's future. Town Administrator Robert L. Whritenour suggested that this may be the final time the town requests upkeep funds for the facility in its current state.
The Madaki Utilization Committee is currently finalizing recommendations for the beneficial reuse
of the property. In the meantime, the town must maintain the building to prevent deterioration. We need another year of maintenance costs for the Madaki school... this may be the last year that we need to continue to maintain it,
Whritenour said.
This request follows a period of significant debate regarding the town's aging school facilities, including the recent decision by Town Meeting to move forward with the demolition of the Mattacheese Middle School. The outcome of the Madaki reuse study will determine if the school is preserved for community needs or slated for a different redevelopment path.
