Enrollment Spike Triggers $680,194 Override for Cape Cod Technical High School

Key Points

  • Yarmouth enrollment at Cape Cod Tech increased by 22%
  • Town assessment rose nearly 28% due to student spike and building debt
  • Voters approved moving the $680,194 override to the ballot

Article 9, a second educational override, passed at Town Meeting to address a 27.8% assessment increase from the Cape Cod Regional Technical High School. The $680,194 override was necessitated by an unprecedented surge in Yarmouth enrollment, with 31 new students joining the district.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Sanborn explained that while overall enrollment at the school rose only 3%, Yarmouth's specific participation spiked by 22%. Resident Rick Stacy expressed concern that a permanent tax override was being used to address what might be a short-term surge. Knowing this will be a permanent increase for something that we know will be short-term, I believe I must vote against this, Stacy said. Sanborn noted he hoped not to return for another override next year but emphasized that building debt is apportioned based on enrollment.

The town’s overall assessment for the tech school reached $4,066,692. Despite the concerns regarding the permanent nature of the tax increase, the article passed via voice vote, moving the final decision to a town-wide ballot.

Motion: I move Article 9 that the town raise and appropriate the amount of $4,066,692... and further to raise and appropriate an additional amount of $680,194... subject to approval of an override.
