- Building gym is heavily used for recreational programming.
- Utility costs are required to prevent fire system freezes.
Voters approved Article 21, allocating $200,000 for the ongoing maintenance of the former Mattacheese Middle School. The funding was met with questions from residents regarding why the town is heating a building slated for eventual demolition.
DPW Director Jeff Colby explained that utility costs for gas, heat, and electricity total approximately $150,000 per year. Town Administrator Robert Whritenour added that the building remains in active use, stating, The building is not vacant... we're fully utilizing the whole gymnasium area for recreational programming.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith noted that the school district lost significant gymnasium space when two other schools were closed, making the Mattacheese gym vital for both school and town recreation.
